Solidgoldmonthly for March

March 20, 2004

Well its the first day of Spring and I already have Spring Fever. Here in South Carolina the flowers are starting to bloom and it was 76 degrees yesterday. Carolyn and I took a walk around our neighborhood and almost everybody was out mowing grass or planting even more flowers. Carolyn is now into antiques and has rented a booth in a shop on Main Street. Somehow I feel it may be just an excuse to buy more stuff but we will see how it works out.

Every Spring reminds me of this quote: "Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath."

Tax time is just around the corner so I have included a few tips in this month's issue. Taxes are your main expense. One of the easiest ways to earn more money is to simply change personal expenses into tax deductions. The best method to accomplish this is to start a Home Business. We have lots of tips and suggestions on our site with new recommendations being added on a regular basis.

Please feel free to forward this issue to your friends. Comments and article submissions are always welcome. Our email address is solidgoldhome@charter.net. Tax Tips

Disclaimer. I am not an accountant and the following is general information only. Please consult with a tax professional prior to completing your tax return.

Don't overlook the child-care credit.

The child-care credit applies to expenses you incur for the care of children under age 13 while the parents are working. And "working" applies to both an employee job as well as self-employment.

You probably know that this includes the traditional day care centers but it can also apply to any activity. One that is popular in our area is martial arts. Mr. Moon has a bus that picks the children up after school and then the parents pick them up on the way home from work.

You can expand this to include computer camp, baseball camp, music camp, or any similar program. The only requirement is that is must be a day program only. You take the credit on Form 2441, Child and Dependent Care Expenses. The amount of your credit depends on your income.

Deduct your drive to work

For the year 2003, each business mile you drive is worth a 36-cent deduction. So, every 3,000 miles you put on your vehicle is worth a little over $1,000 in tax deductions. If you have an office at home you simply start each work day there by checking your email or some other task. You drive to your other office. When you return home you go directly to your home office and finish the day. Now your commute is a deductible expense.

Tax Loophole Heaven

In order to jumpstart the economy, Congress has just passed one of the largest home business tax loopholes in history. The Section 179 deduction has just been increased to $100,000.00. This will dramatically reduce the cost of starting any new business.

To learn more about reducing your taxes and the Section 179 deduction I recommend:

Speeding Ticket Urban Legends

The purpose of Speeding Ticket Central is to provide information that will assist you in making the best decision regarding your speeding ticket. However, we sometimes have a hard time convincing someone who has heard one of the following urban legends. In the past speeding ticket urban legends were fairly harmless since the effect of a single speeding ticket was not significant. However, times have changed and just one traffic ticket can mean financial disaster, especially if you are the parent of a teenage driver.

Hopefully this article will prevent you from showing up in court expecting your ticket to be dismissed based on one of these speeding ticket myths. I’m sure it will reduce the amount of hysterical laughter often heard from the bench when a defendant actually tries to use one as a defense.

Urban Legend #1

“The officer refused to show me the reading on the radar gun. There is no proof of my speed so I cannot be convicted.”

There is no law in any state that requires an officer to show you the reading on the radar or laser gun. Most jurisdictions discourage this as a matter of safety. If the officer does show you, it is a courtesy only. If the officer says you were speeding that is all the proof the judge needs to find you guilty. Most courts will accept a simple visual estimate by an officer without speed detection from any device.

Urban Legend #2

“The officer did not have me sign the ticket. If I do not show up for court the ticket will be dismissed.”

Some states have a line on the traffic citation where you acknowledge the summons and agree to appear for court. It doesn’t matter if you sign or not, you are still required to be in court on the date listed on the ticket. If this were true, nobody would sign and all speeding tickets would have to be dismissed. Not going to happen.

If you do not appear you will be found guilty, a fine will be added for failure to appear, and a warrant will be issued for your arrest. Quite possibly your driver’s license will also be suspended. Texas is the only exception. In Texas if you refuse to sign the ticket you will earn yourself a “Go Directly to Jail” card.

Urban Legend #3

“The officer made a mistake on the ticket. All I have to do is to point it out to the judge and he will dismiss my ticket.”

The story we usually hear goes something like this: My car is pink, my hair color is purple and I am female. The officer wrote on the ticket that I am a brown haired male driving a blue car.

Judges give a lot of leeway for minor mistakes and will allow the officer to correct them. You have about as much chance as a grasshopper at a bird convention of getting a traffic court judge to dismiss you ticket based on the above scenario. As long as you name and driver’s license number are correct you are dinner.

Urban Legend #4

“I sent the traffic court more than I owed for my speeding ticket. When I receive the refund check I will not cash it. Since the transaction is not complete the ticket will never be entered on my record.”

I have saved the best for last. I am always amazed at the lengths an unbeliever will go to believe the unbelievable. This myth has been making the rounds of the message boards for several years. It is absolutely false and I am not going to argue with anyone again over this. If you have a passion for the beans and potato salad served at the county jail, go right ahead.

What really distresses me about a speeding ticket myth is that it may prevent someone from mounting a legitimate defense to a speeding ticket. With the drastic increases in insurance premiums often resulting from just one speeding conviction, a driver needs to know the consequences before entering the courtroom. There are legitimate strategies to reduce the effect of a traffic ticket. Belief in an urban legend is just not one of them.

AOL Sp*m Filters

In an effoert to combat unwanted email many ISP's have started filtering your email. Unfortunately this means that there may be important messages that you will miss. For example we have received compalints that some readers are unable to obtain the fr*e ebooks. This may be because your ISP is filtering them out. If you are an AOL user here is how to check for what you have been missing.

Access your Mail and Spam Controls

on the bottom LEFT where it says BLOCKED MAIL SHOULD BE Permanently deleted or Delivered to your spam folder Check DELIVER TO SP*M FOLDER this way you won't delete something important...

also on the BOTTOM RIGHT where it says AOL's Advanced Sp*m Filtering etc..... you click on the link, you'll find all the email that was sent to your sp*m folder without your knowlegdge.

Joke

A small boy lost his Dad in the shopping mall and approached a policeman.

"Help me - I've lost my Dad" he pleaded.

"What's he like?" asked the policeman.

"Beer, and blondes in high heels" replied the kid.

Computer Tip Organize Your Favorites

If you bookmark a lot of sites, you eventually end up with a looooong list of favorites which are unrelated.

Time to organize them into folders like 'Cookery', Motoring' etc.

Open the Favorites menu in top toolbar

Select Organize Favorites. Click on 'Create Folder' Type in a name Click 'Close'

Select a favorite from your list.

Click 'Move to Folder'

Click Close.

Then repeat the process until your 4638 Favorites are organized into an easily managed bunch of folders.

You can even create sub folders within a folder, like 'Chicken' inside your 'Recipes' folder.

Select a Folder. Click 'Create New Folder'

Close.

Easy as falling off a log.
